Vilcabamba & Saraguro

Monday 23rd May

Arrived into Loja, Ecuador about 6:30am ... shattered tired. Hardly slept on the bus last night. I didnt even bother venturing into Loja town centre and instead hopped on another bus to Vilcabamba ($1.25, 1 hour 15 mins, 53km). Scenery on the way to Vilcabamba was fantastic ...

Checked into 'Hosteria Las Ruinas de Quinara' in Vilcabamba ($6 per night) ... then took a walk around town. Bit of a mixed bag of backpackers in this town .. old and young. Very chilled out town .. really not much to do unless you want to go hill walking or horseriding ... and I was too shattered after that overnight bus last night to do either so I took it easy for the day ... met up with some other backpackers from America and Poland and hung out at the hostel chatting to Miguel and Diana who worked in the hostal.

Polish backpackers I met in town:

I had an early night but next day (Tuesday) I go up early to head off to walk around Vilcabamba. I got back to the hostel later in the afternoon and figured one night was enough in Vilcabamba so I checked out and caught a bus back north to Loja about 14:00 and then I got a connecting bus further north to a town called Saraguro ($2, 55 kms, 1 hour 30 mins). Arrived into Saraguro about 17:30 ... I debated whether to carry on further north to Cuenca but decided I travelled enough today and checked into ´Residencial Saraguro´ .. a nice family run hostel .. no mod cons here, but for $6 was happy enough with the room. Really not much to do in Saraguro and as far as I could see I was the only backpacker in town.

I departed Saraguro next morning (Wednesday 25th) on a 07:45 bus to Cuenca ($5, 3 hours, 170km).
